In 1941, an RAF Spit­fire crash-landed in Sand­wood. The engine can be seen in the sea when tide and weather al­low. The 12.5km (8-mile) walk from Sand­wood Bay north­wards along the coast is the fi­nal stretch of the Cape Wrath Trail. The wider Sand­wood Es­tate lies within a Spe­cial Area of Con­ser­va­tion, and is mon­i­tored by the John Muir Trust.
