- By DAWN GEDDES

THERE’S something quite magical about the transformation of Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square every August, when the picturesque gardens become a thriving hub of bookish activity.

After small beginnings in 1983, the Edinburgh International Book Festival is now the largest of its kind across the world, hosting over 900 events each year.

The 17-day festival, which kicks off on August 11, sees writers from over 55 countries, making their way to the beautiful tented village in the heart of the city.

This year, the festival will welcome a wide variety of authors and personalities including comedian turned children’s writer David Walliams and internationally renowned fantasy author Philip Pullman.

With so many fantastic events on offer, here’s our six of the best!
