Exterior

“Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446,” says Ian, “and it is documented that the founder, Sir William St Clair, brought masons and craftsmen from ‘other regions and foreign kingdoms’ to create his elaborate building. This exterior view, one of my favourites, is the first glimpse of the building for most visitors and shows so much detail – including the carved stone pinnacles and flying buttresses – as well as the mix of colours in the sandstone. To help its conservation, the chapel was covered with scaffolding for 17 years but now that has gone so you can see every detail.”
