Carvings Of Indian Corn

-

“Another of the many myths and legends associated with the chapel surrounds this carving,” says Ian, “which is around the arch of one of the stained glass windows on the south aisle. Some people have identified the carving as Indian corn or maize, a plant not known in Britain at the time the chapel was built. Indeed, the theory goes that Sir Henry, grandfather of its founder, travelled to America before Columbus, and passed on details of things he saw to his grandson. Many of the myths and legends are now impossible to prove – or disprove – conclusively but I think it’s great they still add so much to the interest of visitors and commentators.” 
