The Apprentice Pillar

-

“This is perhaps the most famous feature in the chapel,” continues Ian. “The Apprentice Pillar stands 2.5 metres (8ft) in height and is ornately carved with eight dragons at the base and vines swirling around the main column. It’s a work of art in its own right. The legend associated with it tells of the Master Mason travelling to Rome to seek inspiration for its design. In his absence, his Apprentice saw a vision of the pillar and was allowed to create it. On his return, the Master was said to have been furious and struck the Apprentice with a mallet, killing him on the spot. Faces, said to be the Master and his Apprentice, look down on the pillar from the far wall.”
