Be A Viking For A Day!

This true-to-life experience in Largs is a must for all the family

WATCHING TV’S Doctor Who isn’t the only way you can travel back in time. Largs’ Viking Experience, situated in the leisure complex of Vikingar, can take you back to Norway 1200 years ago.

This attraction is a more than welcome addition to the annual Viking Festival held in the town, which celebrates the Scots victory over the Norsemen at Largs in 1263.

So what can you expect at this quite unique Ayrshire event? Quite a lot, reveals Vikingar’s Tommy Duff.

“A Viking will invite you into his home, which is a replica longhouse,” he says. “Then, as you sit under flickering lights on simple wooden benches covered in animal skins, you’re told stories about the Battle of Largs and what a day in the life of a Viking would be like.

“Then you are offered lunch and a drink from a drinking horn, have the opportunit­y to learn and have fun together, given the freedom to look around and take photos. You are also encouraged to touch and try on some replica items including helmets, swords, axes, shields and armour – experienci­ng, even in a small way, what life as a Viking would be like.”

But that’s not all. There’s a chance to meet some Viking gods – sometimes even their greatest god of all, the mighty Odin – and enjoy a short film that gives visitors a brief history of the 500 years of Viking presence in Scotland, from their earliest raids on the Outer Isles to their final defeat at Largs.
