Fragment Of A Shell
“Our temporary exhibition, The Poppy – A Symbol of Remembrance, signals the end of National Museums Scotland’s programme marking the centenary of the First World War,” continues Patrick. “One theme examines what was returned to families in lieu of a body. When Pte William Dick of the 1st Scots Guards was killed in 1916, his widow was sent a variety of objects from his possessions. Among them was the fragment of the shell which killed him. It was kept in his family’s possession for almost 100 years as a reminder of his sacrifice. The exhibition runs at the National War Museum of Scotland until February 2019.”
