Bedcover Of Tipu Sultan
“One of our most interesting objects is this textile reputed to have belonged to Tipu Sultan (Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu), a prince who ruled the Indian kingdom of Mysore at the end of the 18th century,” says Patrick. “The textile, which may be a bedcover, is made of silk and is ornately embroidered with both red and green flowers and representations of a phoenix in gold and silver. In May 1799, the capital of Seringapatam – now Srirangapatna – was attacked by the British Army and Tipu Sultan was killed during the fighting. In the aftermath, many objects were brought back to Britain by army officers, several of which are now on display in the National War Museum.”
