Creating Quite A Stir

Many years ago I attended an international Girl Guide camp in Switzerland where I met my English friend, Higgy, who now lives in Scotland. For years, we have exchanged magazines as Christmas gifts. I send her Beautiful British Columbia and she sends me The Scots Magazine, which I love. When I received the October issue I was delighted with the article about the porridge-making championships because I had just received a small gift of a hand-crafted “stir paddle” which I could now identify as a “spurtle”. In fact, the wood craftsman did not know the name of what he had been making for years!
