Shirley took lessons in recorder, clarinet and fiddle while at Edinburgh’s Flora Stevenson Primary School.

When she was young, Shirley was a member of the Brownies and Guides. She also modelled clothes for Jackie magazine.

A solo album started in 2006 was never released. Shirley stopped working on it in 2012.

Shirley won the Icon Award at the VO5 New Musical Express Awards in 2018.
