Friars Wynd

Stirling A cosy, traditional stay with delightful modern touches

- By NADINE STEWART

STEEPED in Scottish history, and once the nation’s capital, the city of Stirling has always been a popular destination for visitors from across the globe.

Whilst the university provides a large student presence, there is lots to explore in the steep, cobble-stoned city streets leading up to the castle, where panoramic views over the city and its historic battle-grounds beyond can be enjoyed.

The city centre is bustling and does not disappoint with a wealth of cafés, eateries and a large shopping complex. It's in this central location, on one of the oldest streets in Stirling, I spot my home for the evening.

Friars Wynd Hotel is an attractive, recently renovated Victorian town house at the foot of Castle Hill. With its tasteful sage green exterior and carefully restored period features, it stands out amongst its surroundings for all the right reasons.

On arrival, I am welcomed by staff and led upstairs, through a series of corridors. We pass a small lift for guests with extra mobility requirements. I notice that all 10 rooms have Scottish titles, and the corridor walls are adorned with verses and quotes from Scotland’s rich literary history.

We arrive at a room named Bute, one of the hotel’s newest bedrooms. It is bright, spacious, and the colour palette and dark wood furnishings give the room quite an opulent feel.

Fluffy white towels sit at the foot of the impressive king-sized bed and there is also a small seating area for relaxing. A multi-channel flatscreen TV and tea/ coffee facilities are provided, and the ensuite bathroom is clean and modern with a large walk-in shower.

I settle into the room and then head out for my evening meal. I don’t need to venture far as there are so many options close by – just as well as the Scottish weather is living up to its very wet reputation.

After a lovely meal and a wee stroll, I decide to have a nightcap in the hotel bar before bed. I enjoy its cosy, relaxing atmosphere while the friendly staff chat away.

Quality food and refreshments are locally sourced where possible and the bar serves drinks and snacks until 10.30pm. Evening meals are available on Friday and Saturday nights only, but do book ahead as I am told they are usually very popular.
