The wearing of tartan was banned by the government in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden.

Astronaut Alan Bean, who travelled to the moon as part of the Apollo 12 crew, took a half-yard of his family’s Macbean tartan with him – and brought it back!

Several states of the USA have adopted their own tartans, including Hawaii, Louisiana and Georgia.

The word “tartan” is said to be derived from the French “tartarin” which means “Tartar cloth”.
