Garry Fraser samples some topclass city-centre Italian cuisine

By far my default Italian restaurant in the city, La Vita Pizzeria serves perfect pasta and pizza. I tend to alternate between the two and my recent visit was pasta-time. I’ve yet to sample a better spaghetti carbonara. Rich and creamy, not over-peppered as some can be, with a topping of parmesan the perfect finishing touch. However, if you want to be more adventurous, the Filleto al Nero – fillet steak with black pudding and red wine sauce – comes in at a pretty nifty £23.95. It would take something like that to tempt me away from their pasta, which is unbeatable. Fish and chicken dishes need checking out, too. Be sure to leave room for dessert, though. I managed – just – some home-made tiramisu, which was right out of the chef’s top drawer. The menus cater for all tastes, from breakfast to lunch and dinner. There are also signature cocktails for that special occasion. 9/10

Faultless. Friendly, quick and efficient. Even when it’s busy, as it always is, there’s enough staff to ensure fine dining. 9/10

There’s a real buzz about the place with the murmur of happy diners combined with the chatter of the staff. But it’s still quiet enough for a relaxed and cosy meal out, with the background music unobtrusive. 9/10

Excellent! With the pasta dish coming in at £9.95 and the variety of pizzas peaking at £12.95, a meal for two certainly isn’t going to break the bank. 9/10

More upstairs toilets would be nice, but everything is clean and spotless. The restaurant’s close proximity to Queen Street Station is a massive plus. Booking essential, especially if you are a group of four or more. 8/10
