My Top Birthday Treat
Some prefer a sponge cake, but for my big day I go for a delicious pastry
IWONDER what’s happening in July this year? Anything exciting? Well, I’m turning 50! I’m going with fabulous at 50 because if I don’t feel it, there is no chance I can live it! I’ve been blessed with good health, a loving family, a husband that puts up with me more than I deserve, and three beautiful children who make me proud every single day.
Apparently, however, I’m now officially past my happiness peak. According to a recent survey, happiness reduces past your late 40s – these surveys should be banned. Let’s not have other people tell us how we should be feeling.
Significant milestones do involve contemplation. There are many things that my younger self would have expected or assumed may have happened by now. They haven’t. I struggle with the word regret, though, as it can be so overpowering with negativity it can stop you moving on to better things.
One thing I have learned in my 50 years is that I love good food! The gift my parents gave me of having good food as a staple in my life, from mince and dough balls to lobster thermidor, from lentil soup to baked Alaska, I do love food. I also love making it and sharing it with people. This has been the heart of my family and my business, and this drive never alters.
I used to feel guilty about everything. Worrying about letting people down or not doing a job well enough, but I’ve been able to let this go. I can look in the mirror and know I’ve worked hard, been honest and fair. Yes, I’ve made mistakes but never malicious and I have no regrets.
But, the journey isn’t over. I process what I want and need more quickly so I have time to make the important things happen. I’m looking forward to the next 50 years and a slice of my favourite tart to get me started. If anyone wants to make it for my birthday they are more than welcome. I will have no regrets eating the whole thing all by myself!
Don’t miss Carina next month for another great recipe
