This unique crafty attraction is an unexpected find along the banks of the canal

-

IF you are visiting Kirkintilloch, a walk along the Forth and Clyde Canal is a must. The canal meanders through the town, and bobbing in the water on the outskirts, you will find Craft Daft on A Raft.

The unusual name suits this unusual attraction, which is exactly what it says on the tin. This colourful, bunting adorned raft is home to Kirkintilloch’s very own craft workshop, and Christine Mackay is the mastermind behind the project.

“Craft Daft on a Raft is an ideal family activity for children of school age to adults,” she says. “It’s the perfect activity for all to enjoy, relax, have fun and be creative on our beautiful boat. Grown ups love our activity every bit as much as kids – in fact sometimes more!

The boat in itself is a piece of Glasgow’s history and was built on the Clyde in 1934. It sailed for 43 years ferrying passengers from Finnieston to Plantation – where the famous “Squinty Bridge” is now. Soon the boat will be sailing once again, but this time moving from The

Stables to a new location. From November 2020 you will find them moored up in Southbank Marina ready to welcome you on board.

On the boat you can expect to find a whole host of activities. The main attraction is the pottery painting, with an incredible array of weird and wonderful things available to decorate.

Christine also offers foam clay to give crafters the chance to mould their own creations. Imagination is your only limit on the raft and more is more when it comes to crafting! Choose from a rainbow of paints, gems and pom-poms to complete your masterpiece!

Craft Daft on a Raft is the perfect spot for an afternoon with the family. Some pottery painting spots can be a bit prescriptive, with a rather generic selection of ornaments that need to be perfectly painted, but that isn’t the case on board with

Christine; the wilder your creation the better!
