Enjoy the impressive visitor centre, and witness a feat of nature at the Falls of Shin
THE Falls of Shin is a spectacle that anyone visiting the North East must experience. Just a little off the beaten track of the North Coast 500, the waterfall is one of Scotland’s best spots to watch a mesmerising natural phenomenon.
From mid-may until late autumn, Atlantic salmon return from the sea to follow rivers back to their birthplace. It is an incredible feat of nature that they can navigate hundreds of miles by instinct alone, to return to where their journeys began.
At the Falls of Shin, a viewing platform overlooks the tumbling waterfalls of the River Shin. Watch in amazement as the salmon defy gravity, throwing themselves up the falls, battling against the gushing water. It really is a sight to behold.
Since 2017, the Falls of Shin site has been operated by the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust. The centre was rebuilt after a fire in 2013. Marketing officer Kirstin Langlois explains that the new attraction is better than ever.
“A visit to our centre is a delightful detour into the heart of Sutherland. Follow the single-track road through Achany Glen, along the River Shin to a clearing in the forest where majestic salmon leap up the falls.
“Whether you prefer a vigorous walk or a relaxing stroll – there are different paths to suit your mood. Some of the trails have games to keep the children amused too.”
The shop and restaurant are run by restaurateurs Mac & Wild, who boast two award-winning eateries in London. All their produce is sourced locally and the quality is evident with every bite.
The gift shop offers gifts created by local artists and a selection of Scottish spirits. And to keep younger visitors happy, there is a playpark and a mini golf area.
