Making Memories

- ROBERT WIGHT, Editor @Scotsmaged

AT the time of writing, the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions that have governed our lives for so many months are being eased. More of us can meet outside and while we’re currently being asked to “stay local”, this is due to change while this magazine is on shop shelves. Non-essential shops, galleries, museums and tourist accommodation will soon open. And limited hospitality also should, hopefully, be available. Fingers crossed.

Lots of us will be thinking about the amazing things we’ll do when we can again enjoy our freedom.

For some, that’ll be outdoor adventures – hiking, camping, kayaking. For others, the chance to catch up with family and friends. For me, while mountain trips are definitely on my list, I plan to start things simply.

Recently, I received sad news that my Uncle Martin had suddenly died. He was much-loved and had a huge influence on me – especially growing up. It was the days spent with him, walking and exploring the hills and moors around our Milngavie home, that gave me a life-long love of the outdoors.

Our last conversation was about all the wee walks we’d enjoy in those same places as soon as lockdown rules allowed, this time with my nephew – and Martin’s great nephew – Archie, as well as my new pup Storm.

I’ll still take those walks. And I’ll remember Martin and share with Archie the stories my uncle once told me.

Pictured is Archie at Mugdock Castle, during the brief window we enjoyed between lockdowns last year. Martin took me there when I was a kid, and it seems fitting that Archie and I – and Storm – should soon head back there. I hope that whatever you have planned post-lockdown means as much to you.

Some readers might have noticed that the magazine has slightly increased in price. We try very hard to make your favourite read as affordable as possible and it’s the first increase in three years.

It’s down to rising costs and I’m sure you’ll agree that £4.25 represents fantastic value for the best read you’ll get all month.
