A Paradise For Beach Lovers

The village of Aberdour, with two amazing beaches, is the perfect place to truly unwind

-

FIFE has no shortage of idyllic spots for beachside getaways. During the summer, Scotland’s city dwellers decamp en masse to the area, but if you are searching for somewhere a little off the beaten track, then Aberdour is perfect.

Tucked in to a bay, the town has two beaches, both of which offer shallow sheltered waters, perfect for paddling, kayaking and swimming. Aberdour’s Silver Sands beach has even been voted one of Scotland’s most beautiful.

Another asset to the picturesque seaside town is Aberdour castle. Built in the 12th century, it is one Scotland’s oldest dateable castles. History lovers will be engrossed by the stories that the castle has witnessed trough the centuries, from family feuds to rebellions. It’s also a must-see for any Outlander fans who will be able to spot some familiar locations throughout the castle.

Set among beautiful grounds with a warren of different buildings to explore, you could lose yourself here for hours. If you want to ensure you get the most out of your visit, a guided tour is definitely recommended to gain a real understanding of the castle’s importance.

There is also plenty of opportunity to get the kids involved as Aberdour castle is one of six attractions in Fife that uses the In The Footsteps Of Kings augmented reality app. Load the app on your smart phone and watch as it brings the stories and characters from Aberdour’s history to life. It even offers interactive activities and puzzles for kids to solve as they explore the site.

The town is also ideally placed for any keen walkers. The Fife Coastal Path – starting in Kincardine and ending in Newburgh – leads you right through Aberdour, providing the perfect chance to stop and enjoy some fish and chips at the pier. Or if you have a bit more time to explore, the nearby Humbie Woods offer some lovely walks, especially during spring when the forest floor is blanketed with bluebells.

Aberdour itself is a small, vibrant and welcoming town with plenty of restaurants, cafes and accommodation to make you feel at home during your stay. After a day’s

activities head to Room With A View for delicious, fresh, local seafood, or enjoy cake and unrivalled views at the beachfront café, Sands – A Place By The Sea.

Aberdour is a hive of activity throughout the summer months, but to capture the town at its absolute best, plan your visit during the Aberdour Festival.

The 10-day programme of events towards the end of July offers something for the whole family. Activities, workshops, music and comedy shows are spread throughout the town, and any keen athletes can get involved with the annual Donkey Brae Run or Raft Race.

Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, expand your mind with some fascinating history, or take in the excitement of the festival, there is plenty to keep you occupied in Aberdour.

A stone’s throw from the renowned attractions of Edinburgh and St Andrews, this pretty and welcoming town is the perfect base for an east coast adventure.
