Hut Etiquette
I read with interest Cameron Mcneish’s article in the March issue called Of Clay And Wattle, in which he considers the Norwegian mountain huts. He makes many salient points about the benefits of having many more huts in Scotland as there are in Norway. As he also points out, however, there are many cultural differences between Scotland and Norway. I believe there is an importance placed on trust in Scandinavian countries – and an emphasis on collective and voluntary effort to help society in general. There also seems to be a problem with alcohol consumption here. I enjoy a tipple as much as anyone, but some examples of alcohol abuse by irresponsible bothy users, for example, suggests that Scotland has a long way to go to approach the Scandinavian mindset.
