A Capital Celebration
Enjoy a festive season like no other in Edinburgh, with jolly favourites like a Christmas market, funfairs, light trails and so much more
SCOTLAND’S capital is the perfect place to celebrate the festive season – its wide choice of winter events are set against the magical backdrop of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town’s cobbled streets, all lit up with the Christmassy glow of fairy lights.
A favourite seasonal staple is the Christmas Market – you can find it at Princes Street Gardens, next to Waverley Station, from November 18 to January 3.
An estimated 70 stalls are set to sell a variety of goodies, from handmade gifts to baked goods – including many European delicacies such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pancakes and more. Adults can delight in a warming cup of mulled wine, while children – and those young at heart! – can have a go on the funfair rides.
Take in breathtaking festive views of the city from the spectacular heights of the Big Wheel, and get your skates on at the pop-up ice rink. And don’t forget to swing by Santa Land – new for 2022.
Our capital is home to amazing historical sites, and this festive season you can visit them in all their Christmas glory. Edinburgh Castle is hosting an exciting event called Castle Of Light, from November 18 to December 30.
Discover the building’s incredible history while marvelling at the projections and light shows. It is a wonderful way for both experienced castle-goers and first-timers to see the magnificent castle in a new light.
For older kids and fans of festive romance, Usher Hall is screening the star-studded Christmas film favourite Love Actually – accompanied by an live orchestra – on December 7. This performance has been a sell-out in recent years, so book in quick to submerge yourself in the feel-good storyline, with a superb seasonal musical accompaniment.
Are plants and flowers more your style? Look no
further than Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens event, Christmas At The Botanics, from November 17.
Only a short walk from Princes Street, the gardens have been transformed into a winter wonderland to warm your arboreal heart.
Visitors are invited to take an illuminated walk – a path will be lit with twinkling fairy lights to guide the way through the Christmas-themed glasshouses. Children will be able to enjoy the large light sculptures dotted around, while indulging in some delicious gingerbread men.
Whatever you’re looking for this festive season, Edinburgh has just the thing to spread some Christmas cheer and keep out the winter cold.
