A Blind Eye
Marion Todd £9.99 CANELO
MARION TODD’S beloved bestselling series is back for a seventh time, with a brand-new case for DI Clare Mackay.
Set in both St Andrews and Dundee, this slick police procedural follows Clare and her team as they investigate gritty local crimes.
This time around, Clare has to solve the mystery behind the brutal death of Harry Richards, a local solicitor who is found in his car with his throat slit.
The DI quickly learns that the solicitor was no innocent victim and, when the wife of one of his colleagues is also discovered dead inside her car, Clare quickly realises that there might be something much bigger at play.
A Blind Eye is both pacy and enthralling, and keeps you turning the pages at great speed.
The author, who was shortlisted for the Bloody Scotland Scottish Crime Debut of the Year in 2020, has expertly plotted plenty of twists, turns and peril for the team – so there is plenty for amateur read-at-home detectives to get their teeth into. As the DI investigates the real reason behind Harry Richard’s untimely demise, we eagerly follow our protagonist around St Andrews – a place that feels very much like a character in its own right.
Marion has a superb talent for creating complex and compelling storylines, but it’s her carefully crafted set of characters that really draw the reader in.
While many other police procedurals centre around brash and bombastic DIS and DCIS, Marion brings real depth and warmth to both Clare and her colleagues.
Despite the murders, there’s a rare gentleness to the police station, which reminds me of the brilliant crime drama Unforgotten.
Relationships in the staffroom run deep, and the camaraderie between the members of the team help readers emotionally engage with the story, and really root for DI Clare Mackay.
