We put the latest outdoor clothing and equipment to the test
1 – Vango Soul 200 Tent, £80
THE Soul 200 tent is fantastic value. With a pack weight of just over 2kg, it’s is an ideal choice for backpackers or an occasional night under the stars. It can be pitched in under 10 minutes and has adequate space for two adults. The Vango Powerflex® Fibreglass Poles are strong, light and ensure the structure is reliable. Packs and boots can be stored in the small porch area and the part mesh inner door allows ventilation whilst keeping the midges out. The tent bag has an oversized opening for easy packing away, so after a good night’s sleep you are quickly ready for the next adventure.
2 – Berghaus MTN Guide Technical Pant, £170
PART of the relaunched classic Extrem range, these softshell trousers are designed to withstand the rigours of Scottish mixed climbing and are top all-rounders. I’ve worn them on several big trips over the last month – they’re warm, very comfortable with flat seems and a gusseted mid-section. Four pockets laid out to avoid harness belt and leg loops – two at the hip and two on the thighs. With mesh linings, I’ve generally used the thigh pockets for ventilation on warmer days. Four way stretch allows for easy movement. Studs allow bottom hems to be narrowed around boot top.
3 – Vango Radiate Heated Cushion, £56
THIS heated cushion would certainly take the chill off when camping or even sitting out in the garden. It can be positioned anywhere for heat using a Velcro belt-like strap that would secure around most outdoor chair styles. An easy-to-use touch button controller provides four heat settings that let you adjust the temperature as the evening cools. It is compatible with most power banks – not included – with an output of 5V/2.1A. It includes a handy pocket at the back to store it, and I was impressed with how quickly it heated up.
4 – Montane Terra Stretch Lite Shorts, £60
WHEN it comes to quality, Montane’s reputation precedes itself. Built for walking and hiking (on those warmer Scottish days!), at 190g, they’re super light – even with the included belt – and will squish down taking up minimal pack space. A nice four-way stretch keeps them comfortable and decent double-button fastenings plus the aforementioned removable belt mean they’ll stay in place as you move. I liked the two ample front pockets and a zipped rear pocket, keeping valuables safe. The material is soft and PFC free, ticking the environmental box. Perfect for a day among the hills!
