Catriona Thomson enjoys a tasty afternoon tea at a boutique hotel

FOOD: Our traditional afternoon tea was delicious – the delicate sandwiches tasted freshly-made and had plenty of filling. The mini scones were perfectly baked – though

I wish we’d been given more cream and jam. Cake-wise, the chocolate brownies, each topped with cream and a different flavour of macaron – were sumptuous and possibly the best brownie I’ve ever had. The banana loaf was moist and the toasted marshmallows were a sweet touch – and all washed down by plenty of Brodies tea. 9/10

SERVICE: Staff were friendly and polite, and our afternoon tea was served promptly. Our server checked our dietary requirements before he brought our food. We could have done with refills of tea and coffee earlier than we got them, as we struggled a little trying to attract help. We also would have preferred to see a menu before being asked to choose our tea and coffee. 7/10

AMBIENCE: The original library and drawing room of Taypark House are home to the restaurant. There were stunning views across the city’s Botanic Garden and towards the silvery Tay, and the decor was quirky. The room was busy – it’s family-friendly and there were a few little babies making themselves known – but we were still able to chat comfortably. 9/10

VALUE FOR MONEY: At £20 per head, the price was reasonable. We headed home full, and with just one cake left between the three of us. 8/10

FACILITIES: Clean and functional, and on the ground floor. 8/10
