Crane death probed as firm offers condolences
An InVESTIgATIOn has been launched after a man died when a crane collapsed at a city centre construction site.
gary Currie, 39, died at the scene of the incident at Buchanan House in Port Dundas Road, glasgow, at about 12:30pm on Wednesday.
Another man, 34, was taken to the city’s Royal Infirmary with a head injury and is in a stable condition.
Emergency services were called to the scene by reports that a man had become trapped under a collapsed crane.
A joint investigation has been launched by Strathclyde Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
The building, which houses offices for network Rail and Transport Scotland and is undergoing refurbishment work, was evacuated by Strathclyde Police as a precaution after the incident.
Directors of the deceased’s employers, One Stop Safety Systems Limited, released a statement, which said: “Our sympathies are extended to the family of our employee, gary Currie, who was killed in the industrial accident.
“Our sympathies are also extended to the injured crane operator from Craig Services and Access Limited.
“Our thoughts are with him, his family and work colleagues. We hope he makes a full recovery. Everyone involved with our company has been greatly affected and saddened by the tragic events of yesterday afternoon.
“The directors will do everything in our power to make sure both families are given every possible assistance and support.”
The directors added: “In addition to carrying out our own internal investigation, we will cooperate with the owners of the crane and the Health and Safety Executive in their investigations.
“We aim to provide the safest possible working environment for our workers and everyone connected with the company.”
