When I joined the Group last year to lead the UK retail bank, I did so because I share the same conviction as Stephen Hester – that we only succeed as a business when we succeed for our customers. Stephen has steered RBS back from the brink of collapse during extraordin­ary times and led a process of recovery that uncovered our core purpose – to serve customers well. His personal commitment and dedication to the recovery of RBS is a lesson in leadership, and I know many of you share that view. RBS today is a bank on the cusp of a different, better future. I joined because I wanted to play my part in shaping that future and create a bank that truly puts customers at its core. In every job, I’ve believed that doing the best thing by customers is the key to success for shareholde­rs and that has never been more true than it is today for RBS. This is our strategic intent. We can be certain that there are more challenges to come. But, having already seen what we are capable of when we’re at our best, I know we will build a bank that our customers can always rely on and our staff can be proud of. I know RBS occupies a unique position in the UK. We are not just ‘any’ bank and our obligation to the people of the UK is also our biggest opportunit­y. When the people, households, businesses and corporatio­ns who bank with us succeed then so do we.
