Generating costs

- Dingwall Ross-shire Falkirk

APPLyINg the example of full electricity generation in the Danish island of Aereo put forward by Clive B Scott (Letters, 19 october) to us, it would seem that six onshore wind turbines for 7,000 people scales up to nearly 5,000 for our 5 million plus population.

We only have 300 so far with reportedly another 700 coming, so we had better get a move on for the other 4000 needed.

All these on top of solar, pump and biomass costs.

heat IN reSPoNSe to Paul Brownsey (Letters, october 21), under socialism, there is no private property and the implementation of Marxist socialism requires confiscation by the state of the entire economy.

given that Marx explicitly called for “despotic inroads on the rights of property”, it is entirely correct to conclude that Marxism is totalitarian in nature and must be rejected for precisely that reason.

brUCe CrICHTon Looks like the unions are determined to shut this plant. It’s tragic.

- Jelllie biafra This is an unbelievable display of stupidity. of course we’ll have to support them and their families once they’ve destroyed their jobs and closed the plant. Ineos is still holding the UK to ransom.

- Scotty55

- Atomicpaper The workers should occupy the plant and get it up and running.

- Graham13 How did we get into a situation in which one man can open and close Scotland’s only refinery at will whether there is a strike or not?

- Hippohunter This is the way today’s market place runs as far as big The Unite union currently has nothing to bargain with as the plant is shut. What makes things worse is that it instigated this shutdown by calling strike action, even though there was a suspicion that this was what Ineos wanted.

- Jonnyx It’s pointless keeping this antiquated plant going. The only real question is who will pay the clean-up costs.

- Jonathan Let them shut it. We will reopen with the workers running it for the benefit of the workers and the country.

- Puam I wonder if the Chinese will try to ship workers in as they do elsewhere if the locals aren’t suitable.
