Canning is keen on Norwich loan deals

- RONNIE ESPLIN

MARTIN Canning has confirmed talks with his Hamilton predecessor Alex Neil about taking young players on loan from Norwich City in a “win-win” scenario.

Canning took over as player/ manager at Accies when Neil departed for the Canaries in January and the City manager admitted on Tuesday that he would have “absolutely no issue” about sending some of his younger players to New Douglas Park.

Ahead of the Scottish Premiership clash with Kilmarnock on Saturday, Canning said: “That is something Alex and I discussed.

“I have been down and watched an under-21s game and Alex has recommended a few.

“I will try to get down there again before the end of the season, if not maybe pre-season.

“But I would be comfortable if Alex recommended a player.

“The good thing is that he knows the level of the league up here and he knows the players we have got.

“So he will know if there is someone down there who is capable of improving our squad.

“And if we can bring someone in who can do a good job for six months or a year and send them back a better player then it is win-win for both.

“So if it can work for both clubs we will go ahead and do it.

“But we will definitely be looking to bring in players. Whether it is Norwich or not, we will be looking to bolster our squad.”

Hamilton’s 2-0 win over Lanarkshire rivals Motherwell last Friday was their first in 14 attempts since Canning took over and it confirmed Accies’ topflight status.

However, the defender insists there will be no change to attitude in the remaining four games.

“On Friday it was more for the players,” he said. “I was delighted more for them than me.

“It is important that they now believe they can go and get wins.

“We have four big games left and we have to believe we can win the four of them.

“It will be the exact same attitude in terms of we will go into every game looking to try to win it. We have always done that.

“We look at Kilmarnock on Saturday and think of that as the most important game and one where we would like to take three points.”
