JACK Mcdonald of Kilmarnock Barassie led the first-round Scottish challenge at the prestigious 72-hole Lytham Trophy tournament

Mcdonald shot a level par 70 to be two shots behind the quartet sharing the lead on 68 at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club in Lancashire.

Those four leaders include Stirling University student and former Irish amateur champion Cormac Sharvin, whose home club is Ardglass.

Five Scots hit the 75 mark – Ewen Ferguson (Bearsden), Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie), Michael Smyth (Royal Troon), Scott Gibson (Southerness) and Jamie Savage (Cawder).

The event was first held in 1965 and is a Category A tournament for the World Amateur Golf Rankings but no British player has won the Lytham Trophy since home-county man Jack Senior in 2010.

Meanwhile, Royal Lytham & St Annes is hosting this year’s Walker Cup match between the top amateurs of Great Britain & Ireland and the USA.

And tickets are now on sale for the event, which will be played on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September.

The 45th Walker Cup will see the GB&I team looking to win back the trophy after the USA’S convincing 17-9 victory in the 2013 match at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York.

Adult day tickets are £30, while under 16s go free with an adult. Tickets can be bought online at http://tickets.randa.org or by phone on 01334 460000.
