Glasgow summit for digital sector

- KRISTY DORSEY

SCOTLAND’S expanding digital sector will look at ways of further extending its global footprint at a summit to be held next month in Glasgow.

Speakers at the 360D event will include Nigel Eccles, chief executive and co-founder of fantasy sports league operator Fanduel. Headquartered in Edinburgh, Fanduel employs more than 360 people in the UK and US servicing customers across North America.

A variety of other panel discussions are also planned for the summit on 3 September at the SECC, all aimed at helping technology, mobile, media and games firms. Topics include future trends and potential disruptions within the sector.

Digital creative firms employ nearly 70,000 people in Scotland generating an estimated annual turnover of £5.5 billion. There has been a 33 per cent increase in the number of such firms in Scotland since 2008, with more than 5,700 registered as of the start of this year.

“I’m delighted that Fanduel is playing a key role in 360D this year,” Eccles said.

“It’s one of the highlights on the digital calendar and plays a crucial part in bringing together Scotland’s digital community to share ideas, discuss emerging trends and inspire each other.”

The summit is organised by Interactive Scotland, the industry support group now in its sixth year and backed by Scottish Enterprise. Alisdair Gunn, project director at Interactive Scotland, said 360D will give firms a chance to learn from one another’s experiences, adding: “We want the wider digital community to come along, influence the debate and leave inspired to go out and create, collaborate and make the most of opportunities for growth in this rapidly developing space.”

Edinburgh-based shopping app developer Mallzee will be among those taking part in a “soapbox” event to set out their plans for further growth.
