Currie see off threat of struggling Selkirk

- GARY HEATLY AT MALLENY PARK

IT WAS not pretty, but Currie just about did enough to deserve a 21-16 win against Selkirk.

The visitors arrived at Malleny Park without a win to their name as yet, a long injury list and prop Cata Graur suspended.

However, they gave as good as they got for much of the 80 minutes and their patched up team showed that they have enough spirit to go on and get that first win in the coming weeks.

Currie were behind at the break but to be fair to captain Ross Weston and his men, they did up their game in the second 40 minutes. Winger Chris Logan scored a good try and the centre pairing of Robbie Nelson and Fidias Efthymiou were dangerous.

The visitors took the lead in the fourth minute when Wellman kicked a penalty. Currie soon got themselves on level terms with a penalty of their own from stand-off James Semple.

Semple then kicked another in the 20th minute, but prop Kieran Cooney went over for a try for Selkirk just before the break and they were up 8-6.

Currie substitute South African prop Shaun Ruwers was yellow carded three minutes after coming on but Selkirk could not take advantage though and a Semple penalty put Currie back in front. The hosts scored a wellworked team try 12 minutes later with Chris Logan going over and Semple converting. Back-row Travis Brooke and full-back Rory Banks then scored tries for their respective sides. before a Wellman penalty saw Selkirk grab a losing bonus point. Scorers: Currie – Tries: Logan, Brooke.
