Start-ups given boost by games fund cash

Two Scots tech start-ups are among the companies to be awarded financial backing in the latest round of awards by the UK Games Fund.

Edinburgh-based Skoog music and rhizome games of Glasgow will benefit from grants from the fund, which is based in Dundee and was establishe­d by UK Government to help creative young businesses develop new games ideas.

Firms can apply for up to £50,000 to assist their startups and make their projects a reality.

Skoogmusic produces Skoog – a teaching resource designed for helping those with special needs produce music.

Founder David Skulina said: “This grant from gives us the opportunit­y to carve out a new creative space in the gaming landscape and we can’t wait to get started.

“By bringing new talent into the company we can now take our first steps towards the realisatio­n of “School of Skoog” – an exciting accessible learning game for IOS that explores music through adventure and puzzle game formats.”

Pete Low of independen­t games developer Rhizome Game, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this support from the UK Games Fund that will allow us to move into production of our second original title, and build an ever stronger foundation, community, and market for our new company in the UK games industry.”

The fund attracted 235 applicatio­ns for the second round of funding, with 23 securing grants.
