Birmingham in third bid to land Stewart

- By EUAN MCARTHUR

Birmingham City were last night preparing to launch a third bid for in-demand Dundee star Greg Stewart.

Gary Rowett’s English Championship outfit have stepped up their efforts to land the 26-year-old striker after Dundee rejected a second bid in the region of £375,000, plus add-ons, yesterday.

It is understood the Dens club are holding out for an offer in excess of £400,000, for prize asset Stewart, who is in the final year of his contract.

The St Andrew’s outfit watched Stewart shine with another double in the 7-0 League Cup destruction of Forfar, and Rowett is looking to strengthen his squad in time for the Championship kick-off this weekend.

Dundee skipper James Mcpake is not sure whether Greg Stewart will be prised away from Dens Park now or at the end of the season – but is convinced he will be a success wherever he ends up.

The Dark Blues are reported to have knocked back a £300,000 bid from English Championship outfit Birmingham City for the 26-year-old frontman.

Rangers have also been linked with the former Cowdenbeath striker, whose contract expires in a year’s time, and it appears he could be heading away from Tayside.

Mcpake would love to see manager Paul Hartley keep his prized asset, but the ex-coventry defender knows eventually there will be a parting of the ways.

He said: “I’ve played in the league which is being spoken about and Greg will handle that no problem. He’s a very intelligent footballer and no matter where he goes he will not be out of place.

“I felt as soon as I saw him he would be destined to move on to a very high level. I want him to be part of our team for the rest of the season. But whatever does happen he’ll go on and have a very good career.”

Mcpake is still battling back from the sickening knee injury he sustained in January’s Dundee derby but complications have pushed his return to action back until December at the earliest. But he insists he is moving forward. “It maybe doesn’t look like it but it’s progressing. The recovery is taking a bit longer than expected but it’s getting better,” he said.

“If you could guarantee I’d be playing by around Christmas I’d take that now. That’s the plan but I will know more this week after I meet the surgeon.”
