Fears for Fort George
Fresh fears have been raised for the future of Fort George in the Highlands after Scottish Secretary David Mundell reportedly admitted it was “likely” a Scottish base would shut.
Mr Mundell is said to have told SNP MP Drew Hendry in a letter that the future of the 250-year-old barracks at Ardersier could not be confirmed. There is no threat, however to the Black Watch which is cur- rently based at Fort George.
SNP MSP Fergus Ewing said Fort George should be retained.
He said: “As constituency MSP for Fort George I believe it should continue as is and house the Black Watch. The proposal from the UK Government that there will be further reductions to conventional defence are, I think, quite shocking. There only seems to be funding for Trident.”
Kinloss Barracks in Moray is also being considered for closure.
