Given the warm reception Nicola Sturgeon has received from European leaders, they now understand that Scotland is not a mere region of the UK and will be welcomed as a wealthy, outward-looking democratic member.

And it is highly unlikely that a Brexit UK would treat Scotland any differentl­y from Ireland, which has been assured by Tory ministers that there will be no border controls and will continue as a valued trading partner.

Can I remind Nicola Sturgeon and her followers, in calling for another independen­ce referendum they are seeking to drag Scotland out of the United Kingdom against the will of the majority of Scottish people?

DOUGLAS COWE Alexander Avenue, Newmachar I am writing in support of Clark Cross and his concern for the proposed kite electricit­y generator (Letters, 13 Ocober).

If this concept works as promised, it could give us an energy system as good as nuclear, but not as good as fossil fuel. If not, no doubt the politician­s will waste tens of millions of our money on it, like they did with wave energy.

The main challenge, as admitted by its proponents, is controllin­g the kites. Failure to do so would result in crashes, entangleme­nts, snapped
