Skye’s fate rests on beating champions

-

Skye will have to wait until after the shinty/hurling international to discover whether they will remain in shinty’s top flight, writes Kenneth Stephen.

The islanders set up a finalday thriller with champions Newtonmore after defeating Fort William 3-1 on Saturday.

It was one of their most significant results of the entire campaign and it came in the penultimate week.

Skye will now have to wait until after the internationals with Ireland to find out their fate.

To pull off the unthinkable they have to do what no other club this season have done and defeat Newtonmore.

Skye must inflict Newtonmore’s only league defeat of 2016 and by four goals to relegate Lochaber in their place.

Willie Cowie was Skye’s hero on Saturday, netting a brace, with Danny Morrison rounding off a fine afternoon.

Fort William’s goalscorer would have surprised some. Veteran An Aird legend and Scotland star, Victor Smith, swopped managerial duties for a place on the field and got the counter.
