NINE TIES .... CAPITAL CUP CLASHES SINCE 2006

-

1 2005-06 SCOTTISH CUP SEMI-FINAL HIBS 0-4 HEARTS (2 APRIL, 2006)

l The first Edinburgh derby semi-final in 105 years, it was a day to remember for Hearts fans. A Paul Hartley hat-trick, right, and an Edgaras Jankauskas goal embarrassed Tony Mowbray’s men, who had Ivan Sproule and Gary Smith sent off. Hearts would go on to destroy the dreams of romantics everywhere by beating Gretna 4-2 on penalties in the final at Hampden for their seventh Scottish Cup triumph.

2 2006-07 LEAGUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL HIBS 1-0 HEARTS (8 NOVEMBER, 2006)

l There were no shots on goal by Hearts in a match that allowed Hibs to gain some measure of revenge on their city rivals. John Collins’ Hibs side were energetic and creative, while Hearts looked drained by the ongoing off-pitch upheaval during Vladimir Romanov’s highest level of interference. Defender Rob Jones, bottom right, scored the winner, thumping a Merouane Zemmama corner into the roof of the net in the 32nd minute for Hibs’ first win over Hearts in the League Cup.

3 2008-09 SCOTTISH CUP FOURTH ROUND HIBS 0-2 HEARTS (11 JANUARY, 2009)

l Another red card for Hibs against Hearts consigned them to another Scottish Cup defeat. This time Steven Fletcher was the guilty party, with his red card following a reckless challenge on Christophe Berra. Hearts took full advantage of the numerical superiority, Christian Nade tapping in from an Andrew Driver cross and Gary Glen scoring in the 92nd minute to finish off the tie.

4 2011-12 SCOTTISH CUP FINAL HEARTS 5-1 HIBS (19 MAY, 2012)

l That game, with that scoreline. Need more be said? Hearts totally outclassed Pat Fenlon’s Hibs in the first all-edinburgh Scottish Cup final for 115 years. Darren Barr, Danny Grainger, and Ryan Mcgowan pitched in, but it was Rudi Skacel’s performance, below, that grabbed the headlines. The midfielder was unlucky not to have scored a hat-trick, but the implosion of Hibs’ defence had to be seen to be believed.

5 2012-13 SCOTTISH CUP FOURTH ROUND HIBS 1-0 HEARTS (2 DECEMBER, 2012)

l Again it was revenge for a Hampden drubbing, but again it was a performance six months too late for the Hibees as they would go on to lose the final 3-0 to a rampant Celtic managed by the now Hibernian manager Neil Lennon. David Wotherspoon’s shot was going wide before a deflection by Marius Zaliukas sent it past Jamie Macdonald for the only goal of the game.

6 2013-14 LEAGUE CUP QUARTER FINAL HIBS 0-1 HEARTS 30 OCTOBER, 2013

l The last of Pat Fenlon’s Edinburgh derbies as he would resign two days later, and another disappointing loss against a youthful

Hearts side that the Hibs really should have beaten. The visitors were reeling from a 15-point deduction and a transfer embargo after going into administration and were cut adrift at the bottom of the league. Yet Ryan Stevenson’s brilliant 34thminute strike was enough to knock out the Hibees and put the final nail in Fenlon’s coffin.

7 2015-16 SCOTTISH CUP FIFTH ROUND: HEARTS 2-2 HIBS (7 FEBRUARY, 2016)

l A classic that proved to be the catalyst to Hibs’ cup win. Hearts went two goals up in the first half thanks to strikes by Arnaud Djoum and Sam Nicholson, before Alan Stubbs’ men pulled off a remarkable comeback in the last ten minutes. Jason Cummings’ looping header from a Liam Henderson cross reduced the deficit, before Paul Hanlon levelled the tie with a striker’s finish after a John Mcginn corner in the 91st minute. Hearts hit the woodwork before the final whistle, but it was the first inkling it was Hibs’ year.

8 2015-16 SCOTTISH CUP FIFTH ROUND REPLAY HIBS 1-0 HEARTS (16 FEBRUARY, 2016)

l A much scrappier and less disciplined match than the first tie. A fifth-minute tap-in by Jason Cummings, above, proved to be the winner for Hibs, but both he and Blazej Augustyn would be dismissed on the 78th minute for equally stupid reasons. Augustyn threw the ball away to earn his second yellow, while Cummings got his marching orders for kicking the ball away.

9 2016-17 SCOTTISH CUP FIFTH ROUND HEARTS 0-0 (12 FEBRUARY, 2017)

l A stodgy cup tie on a stodgy Tynecastle pitch finished goalless, with little finesse being displayed by either side. Hearts came close to scoring through Esmael Goncalves and Bjorn Johnsen but were denied by Hibs goalkeeper Ofir Marciano. Jason Cummings and Grant Holt had a couple of half chances for the visitors.
