Young Scots kept out again as their goalless run stretches beyond the nine-hour mark

-

Scotland Under-21s’ goal drought passed the ninehour mark at the Paisley 2021 Stadium last night.

Scot Gemmill was hoping to use the friendly to boost confidence before kicking off the European Championship qualifiers later this year, but their six-game dry spell means they have now gone 552 minutes since Hibernian striker Jason Cummings scored against Northern Ireland almost a year ago. Paul Mcmullan spurned the young Scots’ first chance inside 90 seconds as he fired into the sidenetting while Lewis Morgan was only denied by goalkeeper Andreas Vaikla’s block after his rapid burst which outpaced the visitors’ defence. From the corner, J or danmcghee headed wide while frontman Oliver Mcburnie was unable to steer the ball past Vaikla after Greg Taylor did well to pick him out at the back post.

Estonia’s first chance came half an hour in as Peeter Klein’s shot was deflected wide. Mcburnie suffered a similar fate as he got on the end of a Mcmullan cut-back just before the break.

Gemmill made a raft of changes after the break and the alterations seemed to disrupt his side’s flow.

Substitute Dom Thomas, left, did his best to rediscover the rhythm with two attempts while Morgan was denied again by Vaikla. Motherwell trainee Thomas was again involved as he found Craig Wighton at the back post but the Dundee striker could not provide a finish. SCOTLAND UNDER-21: Fulton, Smith, Taylor, Mcghee, Mccart. Henderson, Mcmullan, Jones, Mallan, Mcburnie, Morgan. Subs: Ruddy, Thomson, Harper, Hardie, Cadden, Sammut, Iacovitti, Wighton, Ballantyne, Mackay, Thomas.
