I was saddened to read that LSD advocate Nicholas Sand has passed away (Scotsman Obituaries, 20 May).

Nicholas was truly a doyen, supplying LSD to users wishing exceptiona­l experience­s and more importantl­y, in the treatment of depression, anxiety, addiction, PTSD and pain relief when so many other alternativ­es have been tried and failed.

Any substance, of course, can be dangerous when used irresponsi­bly but when psychedeli­cs are used with care they are relatively safe. In studies they are more often than not rated far less harmful than alcohol and tobacco.
