Kvitova set for SW19 after knife attack

-

Petra Kvitova is “on track” to play at Wimbledon less than seven months after suffering a hand injury when she was stabbed by an intruder at her home.

Kvitova’s representative Katie Spellman said that the 27-year-old could also return at the French Open, which starts in Paris next week.

Spellman confirmed: “Petra is on track for Wimbledon and she will make a late decision this week regarding Roland Garros.”

The two-time Wimbledon champion has been sidelined since suffering tendon and nerve damage in her hand in the attack in the Czech Republic in December.

Kvitova returned to full training earlier this month and will be among the names on the official Wimbledon entry list when it is published today ahead of the tournament’s start in July.

Meanwhile, Kyle Edmund battled into the second round of the Lyon Open with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

The Briton started in positive fashion with a confident hold in the opening game before going 40-0 up on the left-handed player’s serve in the next. However, Edmund spurned the three break points and lost five games in a row, despite earning another break point in the fifthgame,tofall5-1behind before Monteiro sealed the first set 6-2. Edmund hit back, though, with a break to go 5-2 up in the second set and, although he lost the next two games, the 22-year-old broke once more to level the match.

That proved crucial as Edmund powered to victory by taking six of the next seven games to set up a clash with home favourite Gilles Simon.
