Kelbert Elliott, 10, hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Pretswell after winning Nairn club title

- By MARTIN DEMPSTER

The world’s first Women’s Golf Day was marked by news of another young Scottish girl chalking up a notable success at club level.

Summer Kelbert Elliott, who is only 10, achieved her praiseworthy feat at Nairn, the 21-handicapper being crowned as the new ladies’ handicap champion after beating Jill Johnston, who plays off 19, in the final.

The achievement was described as “fantastic” by Pamela Pretswell, the top Scot on the Ladies Europen Tour for the last two years and attached to the Highlands club, as she took to Twitter to praise Kelbert Elliott.

Her success comes after 11-year-old Anna Mckay claimed the women’s scratch title at Crail, just missing out on that record in Britain.

It is still believed to be held by Carly Booth, who was also 11 but slightly younger than Mckay when she became the ladies’ club champion at Dunblane New.

Held around the world, Women’s Golf Day was an opportunity for any girl or woman to try the sport for the first time.
