Remembering Flodden: horsemen return in Selkirk’s Common Riding
Standard-bearer Kieran Riddell and his attendants arrive back in the town as they take part in Selkirk’s Common Riding, one of the oldest Borders festivals. The event recalls the story of the Battle of Flodden in 1513, when Selkirk sent 80 men into battle with the Scottish king. One man returned bearing a bloodstained English flag.
