Ballot will allocate tickets after rush of applications exceeds limit in just hours

- By ALASTAIR DALTON adalton@scotsman.com

The 50,000 free tickets up for grabs to walk over the Queensferry Crossing was exceeded by the number of applications within hours yesterday.

Those keen for what’s likely to be a bracing 1.7-mile stroll across the Forth on Saturday 2 or Sunday 3 September have until noon on Wednesday 5 July to register online for up to four tickets at www. queensferrycrossingexperience.com.

A ballot will allocate the tickets at random, although a separate allocation has been made to community groups at either end of the bridge. 0 The Queensferry Crossing walks sparked huge interest

A further 6,500 tickets will be issued to those who have been involved in the project.

Those winning a ticket will be allocated a day and time slot and directed to park- ing at a “travel hub”, such as park-and-ride sites, on either side of the Forth.

They will be taken by bus to the bridge and have one hour to cross before being collected at the other end of the span and taken by bus back to their travel hub.

The events will only be cancelled if winds reach 50mph, but walkers should “err on the side of caution” and bring warm clothing.

There will be access for wheelchairs and guide dogs will be permitted, but no other dogs. Applicants will need photographic ID such as a passport of driving licence. Under-16s must be accompanied by adults, and no food or drink can be carried.
