Brexit deals

-

I was astonished, yet pleased, to read the article by Lesley Riddoch and find myself in full agreement (Bin Brexit and let’s just get out now, 26 June). I am certain others will feel similar unfamiliar sentiments.

The EU will not give Britain an easy Brexit since other EU countries would then be encouraged to leave.

EU president Jean-claude Juncker has threatened an £85 billion Brexit divorce bill, ignoring the substantial EU assets partly paid by Britain.

MEPS are planning a new £880 million Brussels headquarters and expect the UK to pay £58m towards it, even although Britain will have left in 2019, long before the building is even started.

Theresa May has endured personal insults and threats, so she should turn the tables and threaten to put levies on EU goods, especially German BMWS and Mercedes. She should also tell the EU that she has no intention of paying the £85 billion or the £58m and that she is immediately stopping the £8.6bn a year levied on British taxpayers by unelected EU mandarins.

As Ms Riddoch states, “being outside the EU is a good deal simpler than leaving the EU”.

CLARK CROSS Springfield Road, Linlithgow Some unusual words from Lesley Riddoch when, speaking of Brexiteers, she speaks of “a country with as much of a conceit of itself, and enough distaste for being told what do by foreigners as Britain”. Unusual, because they could be used by members of the party she supports, ie, the SNP; replace Britain for Scotland, and exactly the same could be said. After all, do they not go on about being run by London? Do they not go on endlessly about running our own affairs – which is what the Brexiteers do? WILLIAM BALLANTINE
