Honour our heroes
Alex Orr writes that it is to our “utter shame” that very few Scots have heard of Tommy Douglas, premier of Saskatchewan between 1944 and 1961 (Letters, 1 July). He is right. Many young people are unaware of the role of millions of Scots doctors, administrators, soldiers, scientists and teachers in building the empire.
In my day we were taught about Scotland’s role and were inspired by it, but years of politicians and educators demonising the empire, and rightly highlighting negatives such as the slave trade, have meant the example of people like Douglas will never be given the exposure it deserves in a country assailed by faux socialist nationalist rhetoric.
