Religious assent: Indonesian tribe makes live offerings to god in volcano crater
Members of the Tengger tribe climb Mount Bromo carrying live offerings during the Hindu Yadnya Kasada Festival in Probolinggo in East Java, Indonesia.
Members of the tribe, who live around the Mount Bromosemeru volcano, throw offerings such as animals into the crater to honour the god Sang Hyang Widhi on the 14th day of the Kasada Month based on the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. However, villagers often hide in the crater with nets hoping to catch the money and food, believing they will bring good luck. The origin of the ritual comes from an ancient legend of a princess.
