Title-chasing Tangerines must follow ruthless example set by Hibs last season

BUCKIE THISTLE v DUNDEE UNITED

Sam Stanton insists Dundee United must copy the example of “ruthless” Hibs to a Premiership return. The United new boy, who joined just hours before Saturday’s Betfred Cup opening win over Raith Rovers, is eager to help Ray Mckinnon’s men make up for the pain of missing out on promotion by losing to Hamilton in the play-off final back in May by ensuring they go straight up in the season ahead.

And the 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who began his career at Easter Road before falling out of the picture in Leith which meant a loan spell at Dumbarton last season, reckons the title-chasing Tangerines can follow the way of the Hibees who forged their way to promotion in the season just past.

Stanton said: “I think anyone who wants to win a league needs to be ruthless like Hibs last season. You need to be strong on the park and you need to take every game as if it’s a cup final.

“But I think with the players the manager is bringing in we’ve got a good chance of winning the Championship.

“All the foundations are here in place. Dundee United should already be a Premier League team. So it’s our job to get them back there.”

Meanwhile, Buckie Thistle have been told that a high standard performance is required more than a shock win tonight.

Manager Graeme Stewart was disappointed with his side’s display when they made their bow into the Betfred Cup on Saturday with a 4-2 defeat at Cowdenbeath and he wants his players to show the Tannadice men what they are really about.

Stewart said: “This is an exciting game and we could have a crowd of a couple of thousand watching which would be terrific. We are looking forward to it but looking at the bigger picture we do not want to be starting our league season deflated.”

“We are in a really hard section with United, Dundee and Raith Rovers still to play and whilst we are never looking to win the group we were expecting to play well in the games.

“That was not the case at Cowdenbeath where we gave away soft goals. If we are as poor again we will be punished even more severely. We had United watched against Raith Rovers and they were good. We need to be on our toes.”
