New balls please

There will soon be a female Doctor Who and women golfers can now join what were formally men-only golf clubs.

Today women are in politics, business boardrooms, can fight on the front line – in fact there is nothing women cannot do.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is planning to crack down on sexist commercials and stamping out gender stereotyping. Wimbledon is over for another year and the prize money for men and women is exactly the same – so why should women not play five sets as the men do? Equality?

Surely the BBC’S revelations concerning the salaries of male and female presenters imply that the time has come to end the constant carping about gender inequality.

Perhaps we should ensure a strict numerical quota that ignores suitability for the job, if need be, to ensure gender balance. This criteria must cover all staff across the board, including those working unsocial hours or working part-time and including board members.

If we are to ignore “suitability” perhaps it is also time to consider more uniform pay, certainly set below what we pay the Prime Minister and covering all jobs, including the catwalk industry, which seems unbalanced to male

employees in pay levels. If we are to be totally serious and “fair”, since we are all equal in our input to society when we retire, perhaps pensions should be set at a certain uniform level for everyone and bear no relation to working salary.

Finally, working conditions and terms, as well as salaries, should surely be the same for all, with no adjustment for perceived sexuality differences. JAMES WATSON Randolph Crescent, Dunbar, East Lothian
