Slight to the 51st

-

I read Bill Jamieson’s Perspective article, “Leadership needed in Battle of Brexit” (27 July), with great interest. Despite his admiration for Christopher Nolan’s new film, Dunkirk, I don’t think I’ll be going to see it because, as far as I can tell from his article and other reviews of the film, there is no mention of the sacrifice of the 51st Highland Division commanded by Churchill to fight a rear-guard action against the advancing German troops led by Rommel, in order to allow the evacuation of the army to take place.

The entire Division fought fiercely and with great courage but could not prevail against the overwhelming odds they faced. Once the evacuation had been successfully carried out, they obeyed the second part of their orders and surrendered to Rommel, who marched the men to POW camps in Poland where they spent the rest of the war.

This is in no way to detract from the bravery of the men who were evacuated, nor of the men who brought their “little ships” over the Channel to bring them back to safety. It is just that without telling the tale of the 51st and other personnel left behind, the story of Dunkirk is incomplete.

LOVINA ROE Glasgow Road, Perth At long last our Brexit ministers are realising there are two teams on the park, as they threaten to leave exit talks as an EU minister demands the UK continues to accept the rule of the EU Court of Jus- tice, even after Bexit. This is just one other threat to add to their £56 billion divorce bill, and their talks about extending the Brexit talks beyond March 2019, as this will be to their benefit. The EU has wakened up to the fact that they sell 800,000 cars to the UK, and 50 per cent of the champagne grown in France is exported to the UK each year.

We should tell the EU we want access to the single market and control of our borders, and only when we get their agreement will we talk about money or anything else.
