The Chicago Cubs continue to go from strength to strength. The Cubs inflicted a 16-4 defeat on the Arizona Diamondbacks to maintain their two-and-a-half game advantage over Milwaukee at the top of National League Central – the Brewers ending their recent wobble with a 3-2 success over the St Louis Cardinals. The Cincinnati Reds were too strong for the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 9-1, while NL East pacesetters the Washington Nationals had their advantage over Miami trimmed to 13 with a 7-6 loss. The New York Mets slipped further behind the Marlins, with a 5-4 defeat to the Colorado Rockies a third successive setback. Major League’s form team are the LA Dodgers – and their winning streak now stands at nine games after they shaded the Atlanta Braves 3-2. In the American League, the Boston Red Sox won a high-scoring contest against the Cleveland Indians 12-10. The Seattle Mariners led the Texas Rangers 5-0 after three innings and held on for an 8-7 victory, while a three-run first set up the Tampa Bay Rays for a 6-4 win over runaway West pacesetters the Houston Astros. The Baltimore Orioles won for the fourth match in a row, 7-2 against the Kansas City Royals, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 and a thee-run second inning helped the Detroit Tigers see off the New York Yankees 4-3. Elsewhere, the San Francisco Giants defeated the Oakland Athletics 10-4, the San Diego Padres shut out the Minnesota Twins 3-0 and the Philadelphia Phillies crashed 7-1 to the LA Angels.
