‘It’s our time’ says Barton as Jags bid to end the Invincibles’ unbeaten run

- By GAVIN MCCAFFERTY

Partick Thistle midfielder Adam Barton is inspired by the prospect of taking down Celtic’s “Invincibles”.

The treble-winners made it 50 domestic games unbeaten when an under-strength team thrashed Kilmarnock 5-0 in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday.

Celtic have won 46 of those matches and are showing no signs of letting up with nine goals in two games this season.

But Barton, pictured, and his team-mates are determined to stop that run when they clash at Firhill tonight.

“It’s our turn to try to take this invincibles title off them,” Barton said. “I think it gives us that extra lift. Yes, we are playing for three points but are also playing to go down in history – to stop the invincibles. That definitely plays its part.

“We have said to each other, it’s our time, it’s our turn to try to do this. That’s the biggest thing for me, we can upset them and go down in history for doing this. Taking that off them would be incredible.”

Thistle were one of the four teams to take points from Celtic last season but lost 5-0 at Firhill in the penultimate game of the campaign.

Barton said: “They have probably done that to every team in the league and we were the next team to get it. “That’s the thing, if you can spend that type of moneyandotherteams can’t, what do people expect? It is unfair but it is what it is and you have got to get on with it.” “I had never played against a team who expected to go out and win every single game by four or five.”

However, Barton feels there is plenty the Jags can do to give themselves a chance.

“A lot of it comes down to individual errors,” the 26-year-old said. “Their movement on the ball is incredible and that is down to the manager. But it is 11 men against 11 men. A couple of seconds not concentrating and a team like Celtic will score, while another team in the league would need a few chances.you have to be focused and make sure you are doing your job.”
